How to search

Click on Search

The quickest way to find most items is with the Keyword Anywhere search.

In the Find Results in: box, use the scroll bar to find Keyword Anywhere and click on it so that it appears blue (as above).

In the Find This: box, type in a search term for a specific item or for a general search. If you type in a + (plus sign) between each word as explained in SEARCH TIPS, the search will include all the words in each item it finds. eg. +baby +seat +safety. If you type in baby seat safety it will find items with just baby or just safety or seat in them. This will cause too many hits and you will end up with hundreds of items which may be unsuitable.

Another way of searching in Keyword is to use quotation marks. By typing in a phrase and enclosing it with quotation marks e.g. 'pork sausages', it will search for the whole phrase 'pork sausages' in the item. This will usually result in only a few items being found or even none if there is no such item. If you type in 'pork sausages' and then click the Search button. This may be your result - Your search resulted in no hits! - as illustrated below.

If you have no result you can try another search. Type in the phrase 'French language' (using quotation marks). This is the result you may get, see below. See how it has picked up the phrase French language in the subject area?

Return to begin searching again by clicking the Search button.

Other methods of searching

There are other ways of searching using the Find Results in: box. If you scroll on the Find Results in: box, you will be able to choose how you would like to search.

The choices are as follows:

  • Title Phrase Search- type in any word that may be in the title. e.g. eagle for The eagle has landed
  • Subject keyword - type in a subject e.g. cooking. Any item on cooking will appear.
  • Author keyword - type in the name of a person e.g. Smith, A. This will find items with any author with the initial A, and surname Smith.
  • Title (Omit the, a, an) - type in a title but not a, an, or the at the beginning of the title. e.g. Eagle has landed NOT The eagle has landed
  • Call no. - Type in a call no to search for a subject e.g. 635 for Horticulture
  • Journal title keyword - Type in any word that may be in a journal title. e.g. homes for Better homes and Gardens
  • Boolean Search - This is a supersearch tool. You can search a host of different and complicated ways. You can search in Boolean (Using capital AND, OR, NOT to link your words is Boolean searching), use quotation marks, parenthesis and question marks to truncate.

Please ask the library staff for a demonstration.
