Traineeship
If you wish to undertake a Traineeship you must first find an employer willing to employ you as a trainee.
You can enquire through your local New Apprenticeship Centre located at this College.
If you are 15 years or older, you can do a Traineeship in an enormous range of jobs from Business to Motor Mechanics to Hospitality. You can learn on-the-job skills combined with off-the-job training. This means you can learn something new and earn money at the same time.
What is a Traineeship?
A traineeship is a full-time or part-time employment based training arrangement. During the course of a traineeship, a trainee gains work experience and has the opportunity to learn new skills in a hands-on environment. On successful completion, the trainee earns a nationally recognised qualification.
How do I know when and when there is a Traineeship available?
You can check the course area information by searching for a course. Simply click on an area that you are interested in and you will see how and what mode the course is available for study.
How long does a Traineeship take?
Traineeships usually take 12 months full-time employment or 18 months part-time employment. It is possible to study at your own pace, which means you can finish your training quicker!
What do you need to do?
- Finish Year 10 (at least) or equivalent.
- Find an employer willing to employ someone as a trainee.

Apprenticeships
A full-time employment based training program that provides an opportunity to learn all aspects of a trade. There are many apprenticeships to choose from and all lead to becoming a qualified tradesperson.
Duration
Usually contracted to an employer for three to four years and complete training off-the-job with a Registered Training Organisation such as C.Y. O’Connor TAFE.
Advantages
- Earn a wage as you train (amount dependant on the industry, type of apprenticeship and level of schooling and training completed)
- Become a fully qualified tradesperson
- Gain practical skills as well as a nationally recognised qualification

Where is the CY O'Connor Northam campus located?
The Northam campus is the primary TAFE facility in the Avon Region, servicing the Town of Northam and Shires of Toodyay, York, Northam, Goomalling, Dowerin, as well as all external students.
