What are Apprenticeships?

A full-time employment based training program that provides an opportunity to learn all aspects of a trade. There are many apprenticeships to choose from and all lead to becoming a qualified tradesperson.


Duration

Usually contracted to an employer for three to four years and complete training off-the-job with a Registered Training Organisation such as C.Y. O’Connor TAFE.


Advantages

  • Earn a wage as you train (amount dependant on the industry, type of apprenticeship and level of schooling and training completed)
  • Become a fully qualified tradesperson
  • Gain practical skills as well as a nationally recognised qualification

  • Discussions with your Secondary school career advisors
  • Recruitment advertisements in the newspapers
  • Work experience
  • Word of mouth, and
  • Direct approach - where you approach a business direct
